RSPCA Rutherford Shelter

The Rutherford Animal shelter is the first shelter constructed for RSPCA NSW that not only combines large, modern and innovative animal housing with RSPCA care and compassion but also an environmentally responsible design. All roof water is stored and reused on site, hot water systems are solar.and outdoor kennels take advantage of solar access and prevailing winds. In the winter the kennels are heated with hydronic infloor heating which is solar gas boost. Water usage and cleaning time are drastically reduced by using a high pressure hosing system for wash down combined with a unique drainage design.

Adoption animals have large kennels and rooms adjacent to lounge areas and indoor and outdoor assessment areas so the public can interact with their pet before taking them home.

The administration building has been designed as the hub of the shelter allowing for the flow of animals into and out of the shelter to be as quick as possible minimising stress on the animal.
Incoming animals can be easily taken to adjacent assessment rooms assessed and then housed, either in clinic, isolation or assessment rooms.
All animal housing is spacious with areas large enough to provide environmental enrichment but compact enough to allow staff easy access and cleaning.
